For a while now our community has been planning to dig up and replace our neighborhood’s water lines. Uh, good. Right? So today they finally get out to our part of the ‘hood and we find out that there’s going to be about $4000 worth of digging that we’ll have to pay for out of our own pockets. Yes that’s 3 zeros. And yes, I’m depressed. (Dennis puts head in pillow and lets out a primal scream)

I thought that if the government was going to do work on their property, i.e. water lines under the road and such, they paid for it; you would only have to pay for the subsidarary lines going from the main to your house.
Like- pothole in road- they pay. Pothole in sidewalk- you pay (which I think is stupid, but oh well).
May want to check with lawyer, local government, or somebody. Doesn’t sound right, but maybe it differs by county/state (I’m in PA).
You’re absolutely right. We had to pay to have them dig from the county line up to the house. What was unexpected was that the water line they had to dig to was way up on our property as opposed to closer to the border. It’s not going to bankrupt us of course, but stil…argh! That’s a lot of DVD’s I could have bought with that dough 🙂
Sorry to hear that. Maybe we could have a fundraiser on the ‘Shack to help?
Dang, that bites. I hate unexpected costs- my wife’s car needed a nifty $1000 in work to get her car to pass inspection. Stupid muffler.
Don’t even get me started about our car 🙂 We drive on old 1990 Saab Something-Or-Other which is in serious need of retirement. But where to get money for a car? Thank goodness we don’t drive very much, just the kids to school and so on. In fact, we _could_ live without a car for a while if absolutely neccessary because everything we need (school, work, grocery store, etc) can be reached either by walking, biking, or public transport (train), so in that regard we’re lucky. But…I hate cars!
